To market, to market to buy a fat pig… Well, we didn’t buy a pig, or any ham, pork or bacon for that matter, but we did stock up on lots of other goodies. A recent trip to Takayama, nestled in the mountains of Gifu Prefecture, saw us up early and strolling through the ‘Morning Markets’. We sampled an array of autumn fruit and snacked on little jars of warm custard pudding, toasted cubes of marshmallow, steamed buns and deliciously tender beef skewers. We filled our shopping bags with apples and grapes, pumpkin and potatoes, garlic and chilli. We spent the afternoon exploring the old town, learning a little about its history and were particularly interested to learn about the long history of sake making in the area. To honour that history, we felt obliged to pop in to a couple of the old breweries and sample some of the many varieties of sake on offer. After choosing and purchasing our favourite of the lot, it was time to get on our way, but not before stopping off for round two on the steamed buns! With lots of delicious souvenirs from our weekend in Takayama we were off home again, home again jiggity jig.
