Muesli to start the day, and the new year

Hello February, what have you done with January? I am not usually one to disagree with the calendar but I can hardly believe that we are already in the second month of 2013. And I am a little embarrassed that I have not managed to share anything on the blog yet. So to start the year here I thought it would be fitting to write about my favourite way to start the day. Muesli is the typical breakfast food in our home and I look forward to it every morning. I make it myself and I love choosing the combination of ingredients, the tempting the aromas of honey and oats as each batch toasts in the oven, rhythmically running my knife through piles of dried fruit to mix in once the grains have been toasted. Making the stuff is just as enjoyable as sitting down to a bowlful. Various cookbooks offer lists of ingredients for homemade muesli but really, the flavour combinations are limited only to your imagination. My latest combo included oats, sunflower seeds, pepitas and almonds – all lightly toasted with grapeseed oil and honey – and a smattering of dried apricots, cranberries and raisins. Served with ice cold milk or a dollop of yoghurt, this muesli is a satisfying and nutritious way to start any day.
