Sunday morning seems to be the time I most feel like wandering to the bread shop to pick up a fresh loaf, baguette or croissant to smother in jam. There is just something about a sweet treat on a lazy Sunday morning that does it for me. The only thing standing in my way today was someone else’s lazy Sunday – that of my local baker who has a well-deserved day off. Deciding to make mine a not-so-lazy day, I rummaged around the back of the cupboard for a box of dry yeast and soon found myself dusted in flour and happily kneading away. Carefully I rolled 8 round portions and watched and waited as they rose, first on the bench and finally in the oven. Sure, the process took longer than a stroll to the shops but the satisfaction of baking those rolls, gently breaking them open and savouring them with a dollop of strawberry jam made it well worth the effort. Perhaps Sundays don’t have to be quite so lazy after all.
